• Hei Xiazi/Zhang Rishan/Xie Yuchen: Hei Xiazi has many ghosts (literally or figuratively). It helps to hang out with two other people who also have their own ghosts (we see that Zhang Rishan has Foye's ghost haunting him, literally or figuratively, and Xie Yuchen has both his grandfather Xie Jiuye and his teacher Er Yuehong)
• Zhang Rishan & Xie Yuchen deal with the weight of the previous heads of their gates' expectations. Neither are dealing with it particularly well. Or Zhang Rishan can't tell who Xie Yuchen reminds him off more: Er Yuehong or Xie Jiuye
• Zhang Rishan & Xie Yuchen & Wu Xie: Zhang Rishan can't tell who Xie Yuchen reminds him off more: Er Yuehong or Xie Jiuye. With Wu Xie he can tell who he reminds him of, but unfortunately, he doesn't think Wu Xie would appreciate the comparison. But also, could Wu Xie stop going down the same path in trying to fight off the Wang clan?
• Zhang Rishan/Hei Xiazi: sometimes old longlived/immortal grandpas want to sleep with someone their own age,

If you want to do it, I would also be very into a Republican era mundane but political au - aka without tombraiding and or without the Zhang family being the Zhang family they are in canon, but still with Foye being in the military, and maybe with the Zhang family of the northeast that Foye's related to being the former Fengtian clique.
